Okay, I don't believe I've mentioned this on here yet, so here goes:
Some time ago, I was supposed to get pictures in the mail of my niece, Ava. My sister-in-law sent them, and after a couple of weeks of not getting them I talked to her over the phone. As it turned out, she looked up my address on
Yellowbook.com and came up with an address that was in Fort Wayne but wasn't mine. I ended up
Mapquesting it and went there on my way home from work.
When I got there, it was quite a little run down house and I knocked on the door. I could hear some commotion, and then the door opened. I introduced myself to the guy who answered the door, and he let me inside. They told me that their son-in-law has a brother with my name, and that he allowed them to get a phone line in his name for their home. Coincidently, their son-in-law shares the same name as my cousin. This to me sounded kinda fishy, especially given my unique surname, so I decided to investigate.
I started by calling Verizon, which the phone line was through. After explaining the situation and giving the gal on the phone my information, she came back to tell me that my information had indeed been stolen in order to get this phone line. Oh, and the phone had been activated back in March...of '04, PS! I also made sure that she matched my Social Security number, and to this she said, 'yes'. So then I spent the next two weeks, many phone calls, and a mess of faxes getting sufficient proof of myself and a whole lotta BS for Verizon so they would get the line cut off. This also included me filing a police report.
As many of you know, I've recently found a new online love called
FaceBook. I was fooling around one day and typed in my name. Lo and behold, another person with my name showed up...also in Fort Wayne! He's apparently 25, in the Air Force and engaged to a girl named Lori. I then somewhat got in contact with both of them. I then figured it was possible for him to have a brother named Branden, just as I have a cousin named Brandon.
Anyway, I decided to call Verizon again to make sure that this was legit. Turns out, the gal I talked to this time told me that my Soc. was not the same one as on the account. I asked her why the previous gal would have told me otherwise, and she said that the other gal might not have been able to see that on the account at the time. WTF!!! Now I realize that this was just a ginormous coincidence and now I have to contact the FWPD and call off the dogs on the whole faux identity theft situation.
Seriously, what are the chances? This could only happen to me.
